Ground Breaking: YMCA Capital Project
On April 25, 2017, at 6:00pm, a groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the Bill Bartley Family YMCA Branch (5001 Bartley Dr) on a $14 million capital project that will bring 80,000 square feet of new family-friendly, energy efficient facilities to the Bill Bartley Family Branch. Everyone is invited to the festivities that will take place from from 5:30pm-7:00pm. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Y will have a FREE festival-like atmosphere with music, hot dogs, inflatable slides, bounce house, and more.
New facilities being constructed include:
Early Childhood & Youth Development Center (with Infant/Toddler/Pre-School Classrooms, Before/After School Rooms, a Youth Library, Cafeteria, Conference Room, and new age-appropriate Playgrounds)
Full Double Court Gymnasium
Indoor Soccer/Multi-Purpose Facility
Grand Entry Plaza
The new facilities will enhance quality of life in our community as doors of opportunity are opened for the following activities: youth & adult indoor soccer and volleyball leagues, 7 on 7 football, family fitness activities, special needs programs, gymnastics meets/events, expanded quality early childhood education, expanded programs for school-age children- both after school and during the summer, reading/learning programs in new youth library, and numerous community collaborations. Local youth will be able to train and compete in facilities on par with those in larger communities.
Volunteer Capital Campaign Chairman, Dennis Cannedy, says, “Your YMCA has had this expansion in the planning stages for the last 5 years. It addresses so many needs of our community, and we as a Y family are so very excited to see this groundbreaking. It breathes new life into our many programs. You will see that we have something for everyone, from our children to adults, seniors and special need families.” He adds with great enthusiasm, “No longer will our families feel the constant need to run off to Dallas or Oklahoma City to play competitive elite leagues because now the metroplex teams can come here for tournaments. And our Early Childhood Development Center will be our shining star in this new facility. The YMCA has reinvented itself specifically for the current needs of community.”
A new road on the south side of the property will lead patrons to a large parking lot in the back that will add almost 200 additional parking spaces. From there they will have direct access into the back sports complex where the double gymnasium, indoor soccer/multipurpose facility and gymnastics center will all be located.
Enhancements to the front of the property include a spacious new Grand Entry Plaza where 40’ glass walls will welcome members and program participants. The front desk will be relocated to this area, thus improving traffic flow and creating an open, welcoming area for all to gather. A U-shaped drop off/pick up area will also be added to improve safety for for Early Childhood parents and children.
Currently, through strong community support, over $12,500,000 has been raised on this project, toward a Phase 1 goal of $13,500,000. Actual project costs are projected to be $14.2M. At the groundbreaking ceremony, multiple matching grants will be announced that will provide opportunities for new donations to be doubled! Stars are available to be purchased on the “Wall of Stars” in honor or memory of a loved one.
The Wichita Falls YMCA has served the local area for over 70 years, beginning in 1944. These new facilities will continue impactful service to the community for many more decades. The mission statement of the YMCA is “To put Christian principles into action through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” The Wichita Falls YMCA does not turn anyone away due to inability to pay.
